About the Center: 
The Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion was established in 2014 and aims to equip public health professionals with the tools to fight preventable diseases brought on by unhealthy behaviors and unfavorable social and policy environments on the local, national and global levels. The Center trains faculty and students in the art and science of health promotion and advocacy and develops and disseminates innovative and effective health promotion and advocacy interventions that address key health issues.

Speaker: Thomas Johnson, (Imperial) Title: The linear stability of the Schwarzschild solution to gravitational perturbations in the generalised wave gauge. Abstract: The Schwarzschild solution, discovered in 1916, describes a black hole spacetime in Einstein’s theory of relativity. Its stability as a solution to the Einstein vacuum equations is fundamental to the black hole notion. In a recent work [2016] Dafermos, Holzegel and Rodnianski proved the linear stability of the Schwarzschild solution via an analysis of the null-decomposed Bianchi equations coupled to the null structure equations. In this talk we shall prove that the Schwarzschild solution is in fact linearly stable as a solution to the vacuum Einstein equations when expressed in a generalised wave gauge. The two approaches should be compared with the monumental proof of the nonlinear stability of the Minkowski space by Christodoulou and Klainerman and the later complementary proof by Lindblad and Rodnianski which employed wave coordinates. The proof proceeds by exploiting a gauge freedom present in the linearised theory which culminates in the observation that gauge-invariant quantities satisfy the decoupled scalar wave equations described by the Regge—Wheeler and Zerilli equations. The analysis of these equations builds on earlier fundamental work by Dafermos and Rodnianski for the scalar wave equation on the Schwarzschild spacetime which shall be reviewed.

Speaker: Yuchen Liu, Yale University Abstract: Motivated by work in differential geometry, Chi Li introduced the normalized volume of a klt singularity as the minimum normalized volume of all valuations centered at the singularity. This invariant carries some interesting geometric/topological information of the singularity. In this talk, we show that in a Q-Gorenstein flat family of klt singularities, normalized volumes only jump down at countably many subvarieties. A quick consequence is that smooth points have the largest normalized volume among all klt singularities. Using an alternative characterization of K-semistability developed by Li, Xu and the speaker, we show that K-semistability is a very generic or empty condition in a Q-Gorenstein flat family of Q-Fano varieties.
